淬火这个词的翻译中国人常常认为"quenching "and "harden"是同样的意思。 实际两者有很大的区别：“hardening” 是一种热处理工艺，就像说正火、去应力或回火等；而“quenching”指的是淬火介质，例如油、水、气等
所以中国所说的淬火回火应该翻译为 "harden and temper '而不是 'quenching and tempering "

in Chinese  “quenching” is a synonym for “hardening”。In English they mean very different things (“hardening” is a type of HT (a type like: “normalizing”, or “stress relieve”, or “tempering”), while “quenching” is the medium used to cool the part (oil, water, air, gas, etc.)
so "淬火回火"shoud be "harden and temper 'not 'quenching and tempering "in English  .

you are right! hardening 就是硬化，所有硬化方式都包括，不一定非要冷却

"harden"硬化，淬火不也是硬化的一种，渗碳。。。。

Quenching is one of the method to "Hardening", other hardening method should including 1. Quenching, 2. Carburization/Quench 3. induction hardening 4. Nitriding 5. etc.....

BTW, quenching shall be translated to "淬火（名字）", and for 淬火介质, there is a specific terminology, "Quenchant"

Thanks for your explanation,but what's the differnce between quenching and quenchant;  how to translate the word "淬火+回火" in your opinion?

涉及到翻译，咱们还是用中文吧。
Quench在英文中是动词，表示将XX工件淬火的意思，。
Quenching是Quench的进行时，初高中语法就学过，现在进行时态也可以用来做名词。在我们的语境当中， quenching就是这种情况，表示工件淬火（名词）。
Quenchant在英文中是淬火介质的意思，就是你说的水啊，油啊等。

Hardening在英文中准确意思是“硬化”的意思， 而“quenching”是指通过淬火，（钢）马氏体状变的方式来实现硬化。因此，hardening意义较广，quenching属于hardening的一种。 但是在实际操作中，很多时候会出现借用的情况，比如客户会说，“carburizing and hardening”， 这里客户想表示的就是渗碳+淬火硬化的意思， 严格的讲应该用carburizing and quenching(and tempering)。

在此种老外的用法中，hardening已经代表了淬火+回火的意思。而在中文语境中，我们总共用了淬火+回火两个词来表示别人一个词“hardening”的意思，可能是这种原因造成了困惑。
